Kelsey Thompson is currently the assistant coach at Augustana University where she works primarily with pitchers, catchers and hitters. Thompson rejoined the Augustana Softball Coaching Staff in 2018 after previously serving as an assistant coach for 3 seasons from 2010-2013.
In 2019 Thompson was part of the NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year after helping guide the Vikings to the 2019 Division II National Championship. The 2019 Augustana squad won a school record tying 61 games led by their dominant pitching staff and potent offense that included 2 NFCA All-Americans, 3 D2CCA All-Americans, 4 NFCA All-Region Players, 10 NSIC All-Conference Players & 9 All NSIC-Academic Performers. With the guidance of Thompson, the Augustana University pitching staff produced a team ERA of 1.83, an opponent's batting average of .197 and 417 strikeouts. Led by Ashley Mickschl's 32 victories, the Augie Pitching Staff was 2nd in the nation with 23 shutouts. Thompson also helped a prolific offense which saw 4 of its players hit 14 or more home runs and a team single season record of 94 home runs. Offensively Augustana produced a team batting average of .349 to go along with 128 doubles, 23 triples, 94 home runs and 131 stolen bases on their way to the National Championship.
Thompson has recently coached the Sioux Falls Steel 16U and 18U the past two summers to records of 42-16 and 43-4 respectively. In the Summer of 2019, The Steel claimed first place finishes in the USSSA Early Bird Invite, Nikki G Invite, South Dakota State Tournament, Ringneck Tournament and the ASA A 18U Northern Nationals.
During her previous tenure at Augustana, the Vikings amassed a record of 135-56, appeared in 3 NCAA post season tournaments including 2 super regional appearances in 2011 & 2012. The Vikings also won the NSIC Regular Season title & the NSIC Conference Tournament Championship in 2011. In 2012, the Vikings earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Women's College World Series and the 2012 staff was named the NFCA Central Region Coaching Staff of the year.
After her previous tenure at Augustana, Thompson led the University of Sioux Falls for 5 straight 30+ win seasons from 2013-2018. In her first season, Thompson led a resurgent squad to a 15-win improvement from the previous season and the first NSIC Tournament berth since the Cougars joined the league. Thompson guided the Cougars to a 30-17 overall record and an 18-11 mark in the NSIC, which placed them fifth in the final league standings. With a banner year in 2016, Thompson led the Cougars to a program record 34 wins. In her time at USF, Thompson and her staff produced 37 All-NSIC Academic All-Conference performers, 15 All-NSIC performers, 1 NFCA All-Region performer & 1 NFCA All-American performer. In the classroom, Thompson guided the Cougars to numerous Easton/NFCA Division II Academic All-American honors individually and collectively as a team.
Thompson played collegiately for Minnesota State, Mankato. As a senior, Thompson was named the 2010 NSIC Player of the Year. She also racked up All-NSIC first team honors, Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year, Daktronics All-Central Region, Louisville Slugger NFCA All-Central Region first team honors, Daktronics All-America honors, and NFCA All-America honors.
Thompson graduated from Minnesota State in 2010 with a degree in Exercise Science with a Sports Medicine minor. Thompson holds a Master's Degree in Sports Administration and Leadership from Augustana University.
